Being RCLA’s biggest event of the year, The Advocate promises strong networking and developmental opportunities to students of all industries. The main portion of the event consists of a mooting competition, where participating teams compete for a cash prize by presenting an assigned law/business related case. Teams will present either the appellant or respondent side of the case in rounds to partners and associates from top law firms in Canada who will act as judges. Those who don’t advance in the competition will have the chance to develop business and law related skills in a conference that is happening simultaneously with the competition. The conference consists of an opening keynote speech, lunch, sessions where participants can receive feedback on their presentations, and the final round of presentation of the top two teams in the competition. Each session in the conference will cover a different way to enhance skills that can be used to improve the case study for future years.
Throughout the conference, networking will take place among judges, articling students, guest speakers and peers who have similar interests. The Advocate is targeted to all students and it strives to provide a valuable opportunity for participants to connect with legal professionals while developing crucial skills such as presentation, communication, teamwork and critical thinking.
